A charming Alpine town

Enjoy culture with the view of majestic mountains

Sterzing, Italy’s northernmost town, is located south of the main chain of the Alps. Surrounded by soaring mountains, Sterzing is in the midst of an impressive natural backdrop which is ideal for summer and winter activities. The magnificent townhouses featuring oriel windows dot the picturesque shopping street, where many businesses, restaurants and bars create a lively atmosphere - in one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. Before the gateaway to the town, Gothic churches and striking castles, such as the Burg Reifenstein castle serve as a testament to the town’s heyday in the Middle Ages. What's more, Sterzing was enriched through mining operations during the 15th century, a period during which significant architectural structures like the Twölferturm tower, the town hall and houses were built. Track down history on a tour through the old and new town, while spending your holiday in South Tyrol!

Italy’s northernmost town

On your first visit to the town it cannot go unnoticed: it's the Zwölferturm, the town’s most striking landmark. It has brought together the old and new town since 1472 and on the vibrant shopping street, dotted with colourful medieval facades, you can explore the most hidden and  important spots of the town. Take a stroll and you'll come across churches and artistic treasures from the Gothic period. Do you know that Sterzing looks absolutely stunning from above? Go up the Rosskopf mountain! It only takes you few minutes to reach the height of 2,189 m by gondola and experience the local culture, cuisine, hiking and skiing adventures.

Not far from the town, there are some of South Tyrol's most notable castles. Wolfsthurn Castle, South Tyrol’s only baroque castle, houses the Museum of Hunting and Fishing. Burg Reifenstein stands on a craggy mountainside. The castle is divided into ten rooms, which you can see for yourself on a tour. On the opposite side above Sterzing, you can marvel at Castle Sprechenstein and its unique architectural features.

Sterzing is also known for its past as an important mining town. The life of the miners who used to work in the area is exhibited in the South Tyrol Museum of Mining in the Ridnauntal valley, some kilometers away from Sterzing.
