Reifenstein Castle near Vipiteno

One of the South Tyrol’s best-preserved castles

Reifenstein Castle is located atop the rocky outcrop that protrudes southwest of Vipiteno. While a simple circular wall demarcates the southern end of the castle, to the north there is an intricately constructed outer bailey with ogive arches, portcullis (renovated), wall-walks, embrasures and loopholes. The historical bridge still leads across the deep gully between the main castle and the bailey. Near the castle you’ll find the little Church of St. Zeno, which was first documented in 1330. Although the interior is not open to the public, it is noteworthy for the Bajuwaric tree-trunk coffins (fourth to eighth century AD) found here.

OUR TIP: Reifenstein Castle is located near the Brennero-Bolzano Bicycle Route.
