The Isarco Valley’s Alpine Pastures

Hiking with mountain views in the Valley of Trails

The Isarco Valley boasts two of the most beautiful alpine pastures in the Alps: Villanderer Alm and the Lüsner Alm, also known as Rodenecker Alm.

On Rodenecker–Lüsen Alm there are easy hiking trails for people of all ages, making this alpine pasture ideal for families and groups. Mountain bikers will also find their ideal trail here. Leisure hikers will find places to stop along the way, many of which offer large sun terraces. In winter the tranquility of this alpine pasture attracts passionate winter hikers and snowshoeing enthusiasts. Cross-country skiers glide along the trails here, enjoying the stillness and the views. Events like the Alpine Trail, the longest sled dog race in the Alps, and Almkirchtag, with traditional music and culinary specialties of the region, ensure variety.

The alpine hiking area known as Villanderer Alm – located between Villandro/Villanders, the Sarentino/Sarntal Valley, Barbiano/Barbian and Chiusa at altitudes ranging between 1,700 and 2,500 meters – offers a variety of different hikes and circuit trails for mountain bikes. In summer and winter alike, the highest-elevation alpine pasture in Europe holds fantastic panoramas of the Dolomites in store as well as rewarding hiking trails and circuits that lead from mountain hut to mountain hut, run across meadows and pastures and through the cool Swiss stone pine forests and mountain pines of the plateau. Villanderer Alm is the plateau that affords the most beautiful panorama of the Dolomites.
