The Isarco Valley’s Artistic and Natural Monuments

Striking witnesses to time in the Valley of Trails

Anyone who journeys through the landscape of the Isarco Valley will surely happen quickly upon some of the valley’s many castles, monasteries, churches and chapels. But the Isarco Valley also has other impressive sights to offer – some of which we owe to artists and craftsmen and others of which were created by Mother Nature.

At Racines, near Vipiteno in the Wipptal Valley, you’ll find Gilfenklamm Gorge. It was baptized Kaiser Franz Josef Gorge a century ago and is now accessible via newly constructed walkways and stairs. The gorge runs through the marble-mining area of the Racines Valley and is Europe’s only marble gorge.

Visitors shouldn’t miss the ten-hectare Raier Moos, a protected wetland biotope near Raas in the municipality of Natz Schabs. On the circuit trail through Moos, you’ll enjoy valuable microhabitats with very unique flora and fauna.

Did you know …

… that Gilfenklamm is the world’s only gorge that is deeply incised in pure white marble?
