Christmas is one of the most magnificent and moving times of the year. With the smell of Christmas cookies and hot drinks in the air, children can hardly wait for Christmas. Ancient customs and traditions, music and high spirits all combine in the festive December Christmas markets.
There are five large traditional Christmas markets in South Tyrol, located in the picturesque towns of Bressanone/Brixen, Vipiteno/Sterzing, Brunico/Bruneck, Bolzano/Bozen and Merano/Meran. Each of these five towns has its own flair.
The Christmas market in Bressanone/Brixen*
24th November 2017 - 6th January 2018
During Advent a very special Christmas atmosphere prevails in the Cathedral Square in Bressanone/Brixen. The Christmas market manages to blend the bustle of activity with tranquil surroundings. The market itself offers many original gift ideas from the area's traditional Alpine craftsmanship. Delicious mulled wine and local specialities make for a reflective Advent season in a cheerful evening atmosphere.
The Bressanone Hofburg
becomes host to a colorful light and music show that narrates the journey of Soliman, the elephant that passed through Bressanone in the 16th century. The show Soliman's Dream
leads us into a magic world of fantasy.
A visit to the Nativity Museum in the Prince Bishop's Palace and the famous cloister are an experience you should not miss. Here you can see nativity scenes from the Baroque era to the present.
The Christmas market in Vipiteno/Sterzing*
24th November 2017 - 6th January 2018
The Zwölferturm towers majestically over the centre of the medieval trading centre of Vipiteno/Sterzing. During the Christmas season this structure is lavishly decorated with lights. From here the Christmas market extends into the old city where you can find farmhouse products and typical regional delicacies. Delicacies such as delightful cheese, fine wine and spirits, traditional sweets, but also herbal teas and organic products are offered for sale by local Alpine farmers.
TIP: Well worth seeing is a special exhibition on the mining history of the region.
Mountain Christmas at Monte Cavallo/Rosskopf, Vipiteno/Sterzing

Medieval Christmas in Chiusa/Klausen

Festive medieval parade
Although it is smaller than the South Tyrolean Original Christmas Markets which take place in the two other Valle Isarco/Eisacktal towns such as Bressanone/Brixen and Vipiteno/Sterzing, the Medieval Christmas Market in Chiusa still offers a special program and attracts visitors to the centre of this small artists’ town at the foot of the Sabiona Abbey. The merchants dress in medieval attire, while night watchmen wander through the alleys, telling stories from bygone days. Thanks to the many lanterns, candles and brightly decorated trees, visitors are able to experience the atmosphere of Christmas in Chiusa in the past. In about 20 stalls local delicacies and handmade gifts will be on sale.
TIP: A walk through Chiusa's old town, strolling past the ancient Tyrolean houses with their bow windows and along the narrow side streets.
Stubenadvent – Christmas time in Colle Isarco/Gossensass

The second edition of the charming Stubenadvent advent celebration takes place this year too, at the main square of Colle Isarco. It will be a cheerful advent market with exclusively local produce on offer. The production of traditional crafts will be displayed to the public.
