VIPITENO/STERZING Parish Church „Unsere liebe Frau im Moos/Nostra signora delle paludi“ In late Gothic style, with 5 sculptures by Hans Multscher. Lapide Postumia Victorina, a Roman tombstone unearthed in 1497.
The Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit in the town square In the church, built in 1399, there are late-Gothic frescoes dating from 1402 by the South Tyrol painter Hans von Bruneck. Open from 8.30 a.m. to noon and from 2.30 to 6 p.m., Saturday afternoon, Sunday and holidays closed
CAMPO DI TRENS/FREIENFELD Sanctuary of Maria Trens Built in 1498 in the Gothic style and dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations of South Tyrol (the miraculous image of the Madonna with Child is a wood sculpture from 1470). Open every day.

RIO PUSTERIA/MÜHLBACH The Chapel of St. Florian This two-storey chapel was built in the 15th century and consecrated in 1482. The original consecration document is preserved in the parish archives. The frescoes on the external wall are from the time of Friedrich Pacher: the oldest depiction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, portraits of the founder, and Our Lady of Sorrows. FIUMES/VIUMS The Parish Church of S. Maddalena The church of St. Magdalena is constructed on the foundations of a church consecrated in 1281, the current building with its stumpy tower dating from 1500. The tower was completed in the 17th century.

BRESSANONE/BRIXEN Cathedral Initially constructed in the 10th century in an Ottonian style and rebuilt around 1200 in the Romanesque style with aisles, a crypt, three apses and two bell towers on the façade. The new Baroque construction dates back to 1745-54, with frescoes by Paul Troger and the high altar by Theodor Benedetti. The Neo-classic pronaos was built by Jakob Pirchstaller in 1783. Open daily from 9 a.m. to noon and from 3 to 6 p.m. Cathedral cloister Magnificent Romanesque architecture with cross vaults from the 14th century exemplifying the evolution of medieval art all in a single environment. BRESSANONE/BRIXEN-MILLAN/MILLAND The Pilgrimage Church of the Holy P. J. Freinademetz A new parish church designed by the South Tyrol architect Dr. Othmar Treffer, in 1984-85. The church is a pleasant and friendly modern construction of wood, glass and concrete. It takes the form of a tent with a gradually rising roof and pointed steeple. It is decorated with paintings and statues by some of South Tyrol‘s artists: Gotthard Bonell, Friedrich Gurschler, Traudi Erckert, Vinzenz Mussner, Wilhelm and Viktor Senoner. On the lower floor is a weekday chapel and an exhibition of the life and work of the church‘s patron, the Holy Father Josef Freinademetz, the Tyrol‘s missionary in China. The church is worth seeing, it is a modern architectural work of art, a light and airy sacred place for religious worship, a welcoming destination for pilgrims. VARNA/VAHRN Convent of the Augustinian monks of Novacella A must visit and especially the late Baroque style church, the Gothic cloister, the art gallery, the well of miracles and the library with its precious Rococo style furnishings. Guidet tours year round at 10 and 11 a.m and 2, 3 and 4 p.m.; closed on Saturdays and holidays. From January to march closed also on Mondays. From the middle of July to the middle of September guided tours also at noon and 1 p.m. The guidet tours take place with a min. of 10 persons. From November to Eastern guidet tours at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. also with a lower numer of participants. CHIUSA/KLAUSEN Sabiona/Säben Fortress Sabiona is the spiritual cradle of the entire Tyrol region and one of its oldest monuments. Today, the fortress is the site of the enclosed convent of the Benedictine nuns. Some parts of the monument can be visited every day from 8 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. No tours are available for the convent. Instead, the church of Our Lady is open from the middle of April to the end of October every Tuesday and Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Guidet tours on request. From the middle of 15. April to the end of November guidet tours for groups only on request at the Tourist Office Klausen möglich. BARBIANO/BARBIAN Trechiese/Dreikirchen Three small churches built in the 12th and 15th century in an incredibly beautiful location with a fantastic view over the Isarco Valley. Visitors will be surprised by the level of artistic skill of the late-Gothic frescoes. This location can only be reached on foot over beautiful paths. LAION/LAJEN The Church of Our Lady in the village of Lajen This picturesque Gothic church was mentioned as early as 1147. According to saying the church rose up from the foundations of a pagan place of sacrifice. The high altar is an interesting combination of Gothic and Renaissance, the side altars are in the neo-Gothic style. Open daily for visits
The Church of St. Nikolaus in Albions The oldest parts of Albions‘ church go back to the time of the transition from late Romantic to early Gothic. The interior of the church is astonishing: pointed and arched portals, pointed and arched windows with ornamental tracery and trefoil vaulting. The Baroque high altar displays carvings of the patron saints of farm workers Silvester, Georg, Margareth and Valentin, from the workshop of Dominikus Vinazer (1720). The beautiful Gothic altarpiece (ca. 1520) is a late work by the Brixen artist Andre Haller, and is the gem of this church. On the inner sides of the altarpiece are scenes from the life of St. Georg, at that time the patron saint of the Tyrol. On the outer sides the paintings of St. Nikolaus and St. Erasmus are greatly to be admired. Information and reservations at the tourist offices in Lajen, tel. 0471 655 633

St. Johann in Ranui (1744) The church was built in 1744 and dedicated to St. Johannes Nepomuk. The altarpiece depicting Our Lady on her throne and Johannes showing her his un-decomposed tongue as a sign that he had not divulged confessional secrets, was painted by Franz Sebald Unterberger. The life of the saint is portrayed in a series of nine paintings. The key can be obtained from the neighbouring Ranuihof farmhouse.
The church of St. Jakob First mentioned in 1349. The church is surrounded by a wall with a round arch door. The present form dates back to around 1500. Don’t forget to look at the beautiful Gothic wing altar (1517). From June to end October. Thursdays: 4 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Sundays: from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The Filial church of St. Valentin The Filial church of St. Valentin. This church was mentioned in 1303, maybe even earlier in 1090. The church town with its stone pyramid head comes from the Romanesque period (stone head from 13th Century). |
