Free cycling routes and idyllic panoramic views are afforded by the Brennero-Bolzano bicycle route, part of the trans-national Munich-Verona cycling road.

This well-signposted route runs about 100 km from Brennero to Bolzano, through gently rolling hills and meadows and surrounding woods. The new “bike and hike” trail begins at the famed Brennero Pass and leads along the former railway line, running slightly downhill to the medieval trade city of Vipiteno. The signposted bicycle trail then winds evenly or at a slightly ascending climb through picturesque villages, hamlets and towns down to the fortress of Fortezza, before crossing Lake Varna and travelling all the way down the chestnut road to the historically important abbey of Novacella/Neustift, and from there to the ancient bishop’s seat of Bressanone/Brixen.

The next part leading from Bressanone to Bolzano runs downhill through Valle Isarco. A recommended point for a break is the medieval city of Chiusa/Klausen, home to many artists, with its impressive abbey Sabiona/Säben on the mountain above. The last part of the route leads into the capital of South Tyrol, Bolzano.
