Where princes and counts resided

Striking and full of stories

These eye-catching buildings of yesteryear are impressive: mostly built on high ground, visible from afar and with over 900 years old of history. Today, we are in awe of the around 800 forts, castles and residences, which either served as a defensive structure, were the residence of rich nobles and wealthy citizens or had a representative purpose. Castles also bear witness to the thriving economy and culture of our region, which has always bridged the north with the south. Especially in the 11th and 12th centuries, many castles were safe retreats of sovereigns. Surround yourself by historic walls, which today due to a careful restoration, can be experienced as a museum, hotel, restaurant or event location.
