The villages in the Brixen and environs region

Nestled in a valley basin and settled on a plateau, slightly secluded or well visited: the places in and around Brixen have so much variety to offer. Find out here which place is the best for your holiday.

What can you see and do in Brixen and its environs?

The region’s past as a central passageway between north and south has left a rich legacy. See it for yourself at the Bishop's Palace in Brixen, Tyrol’s oldest city and the legacy of the powerful prince-bishops. Head to the artist town of Klausen/Chiusa to discover the spirit of Albrecht Dürer. Stroll through the alleys of the town, notice how the historical has been tastefully combined with the new. Here preservation has been given great importance, e.g. in the cloister of Brixen with its extremely well-preserved Gothic ceiling frescoes or in the Klausen town museum, which houses the extraordinary Loreto treasure and incredibly interesting exhibitions.

If you want to escape the urban area, get out into nature thanks to the area’s close proximity to the mountains. Get in a cable car and discover the hiking areas of Plose and Gitschberg. Upon reaching the summit, you can enjoy the gentle wind of spring on a hiking trail or bike route winding through mesmerizing high-altitude alpine pastures. Alternatively, you can visit wine estates or wineries in the area surrounding Brixen and Klausen. Make the most of longer hours of light and cooler nights: sit outside and sip a glass of exquisite wine. It's in South Tyrol, that some of Italy's best white wines are produced. The stunning view of the rolling vineyards - dotted with light green sprouting vines - offers a glimpse of the great value of the local winemaking tradition.

Lots of producers sell straight from the farm where you can sample the treats and get to know who they are. With a bit of luck, you can even look over the shoulders of craftsmen at work as they create jewellery, wooden sculptures and baskets while strolling through the village or town.
